Occupy The Body Shop! It's B-Movie Mall Madness!
![]() |
| "Can you play Tears for Fears?" |
Even though I'm generally occupied with beer, string cheese and a stack of whatever bad movies had "apocalypse" in the description that day, I find the time to be aware of how shitty the current American economy is. Pabst Blue Ribbon should never cost more than $8 for a six pack. Anarchy! Anyways, I may not have a T.V. box, but I do ride the bus which has been re-routed several times due to the current Occupy Seattle movement.
![]() |
| "ZOMG! Sale at Mr. Rags you guys!" |
I completely agree with the politics of the movement, but pooping in a bush and listening to bongo drums in the rain really isn't my deal, so to do our part here at TEC, in the spirit of taking down evil corporations and criticizing mass consumerism during the holiday season (unless you are consuming mass amounts of PBR and string cheese), I give you my list of the best of the worst horror movies involving mall murder and department store death! Okay, so the criticism on consumerism here is pretty poorly conceived, we're not talking Dawn of the Dead metaphors, but it's basically the idea with just more boobs! So break out your pepper spray and let's shop till we drop...our corporate bank accounts in favor of local credit unions!!! Fuck yeah!
5. THE INITIATION (1984)
Criticism on Consumerism: Vapid, spoiled, rich sorority girls are mall murdered
Mall Madness/Department Store Death Score: 4 out of 10
Kelly Fairchild (metaphor!) is a wimpy emotional rich girl. She is portrayed by actress/Druish Princess/Melrose Place resident Daphne Zuniga. These are all parts of this film's plot. I think. Anyhow, Kelly has this weird fear of seeing people catch on fire due to this persistent nightmare she has been having since childhood of seeing a guy (who might be her birth father) on fire and possibly burn to death. This dream is portrayed in a dream sequence shown several time throughout the film in order to helpfully remind us she is a crazy person.
Since Kelly is already socially stunted due to these crippling burning man night terrors, she decides to head off to college and pledge a sorority. In case you don't know, sorority girls are bitches. Or at least that's the general rule of movies involving sorority girls. It might seem odd that a bunch of women that hate other women would choose to live in houses full of women, but you're going to have to remember that the key to great film fantasies like this is to suspend all disbelief. I think.
![]() |
| Even when written in murder blood, turn out Kelly is still not a menacing name. |

| "Omigod, Teresa, you spaz! What did I say about borrowing stuff from my room!" |
4. NIGHT OF THE COMET (1984)
B-Movie Genre: Sci-fi/Horror/ComedyCriticism on Consumerism: Southern California, the land of fake boobs, movie magic and asshole celebrities, is destroyed by a passing comet which turns the population into dust or slowly dying brain dead zombies.
Mall Madness/Department Store Death Score: 6 out of 10
Regina "Reggie" Belmont (Catherine Mary Stewart) is a disillusioned twenty something whose life consists of working at a small movie theater, boning her mediocre boyfriend, dealing with her teenage little sister and maintaining the top score on the arcade game Tempest. Everyone in the city is gearing up to watch the passing of a famed comet with the hopes of having something to do or being amazed by flashing lights or whatever. Reggie remains uninterested. The night of the comet (HEYO) she discovers that her Tempest score has been usurped by some dick fart with the initials, "DMK." Feeling as though her life has obviously lost all of it's true meaning, she decides to have a "I just want to forget" fuck in the projection booth at work with her boyfriend. Luckily for her, the steel lined walls protect these two horny kids from the unpredicted zombie radiation of the incoming passing comet.

3. HIDE AND GO SHRIEK (1988)
B-movie Genre: Horror/SlasherCriticism on Consumerism: Misunderstood cross-dressing ex-con/crazy person and furniture store employee hunts down spoiled teenagers who break into the store to spend a night partying and boning.
Mall Madness/Department Store Death Score: 8 out of 10
Let's say it's 1988. Leave out your past regrets, I'm just setting a scene. You and your white attractive (this word was more loosely applied in the 80's so it's okay) friends want to celebrate your upcoming high school graduation. What do you think? Cabo? Palm Beach? Six Flags? If you thought of any of these things, you are NOT concentrating on 1988 like I totally just TOLD you to DO! GAWD!!!! Anyway, why do something as gay as roller coasters or sandy beaches when you can break into your friend's dad's furniture store for a night and party?!?
![]() |
| "I call the bunk bed!" |
That's right. Endless beds and beer? Um, yes! You mean my best friend and I can lose our virginity in adjacent beds in the same room while our unattached friends stand by in awkward silence? Awesome! I hope we can give birth to our first children this way! So as I just made clear, a group of wacky teens decide to do just that and break into one of their dad's furniture store to spend graduation night. While some of them wrestle with their moral upbringings in deciding whether or not the stage is set and the lights are right to finally become a woman, the rest of them just fuck each other.

| Dear LGBT community, Sorry. Love, TEC |
2. PHANTOM OF THE MALL: ERIC'S REVENGE (1989)
B-Movie Genre: Horror/Comedy/RomanceCriticism on Consumerism: Local Mayor is bought off by corporate giant who burns down a young man's house when he refuses to sell in order to build a giant mall on the property. Dicks.
Mall Madness Score: 9 out of 10
One time, in a year far far away, someone that was French wrote a novel called Phantom of the Opera or the French equivalent anyway. It tells the romantic story of a disfigured composer who stalks a young opera singer and tries to woo her with murders and kidnapping. Or is that the musical? Or the movie? Or, who cares? Well anyways, PHANTOM OF THE MALL: (spoiler alert) ERIC'S REVENGE is similar in the way that he wears the half mask, is disfigured and get's creepy with a non-disfigured girl. Eric (Derek Rydall) is a young and hunky house owner dating young and girl hunky Melody (Kari Whitman). A corporate honcho has been pressuring him to sell his property so he can tear down Eric's house and build a gigantor mall. Eric, knowing how hard it must be to find cheap housing in the Valley, refuses, thus setting in motion his path to disfigurement and phantoming. The corporate big wig sends a thug out to Eric's place to set it on fire. Unfortunately, Eric and Melody are inside at the time involved in romantic coitus. As the fire envelopes the house, Eric risks his life to save Melody's, pushing her out of a window as the house falls on top of him.

1. CHOPPING MALL (1986)
B-Movie Genre: Horror/Sci-Fi
Criticism on Cosumerism: State of the art robots placed in the local mall for security purposes go rogue and murder sex-having teenagers.
Mall Madness/Department Store Death Score: 10 out of 10!!!
For B-movie lovers, this is the most obvious go-to non-shocking pick for #1 mall-related horror films. Though it was an easy choice, tt simply can't be topped. CHOPPING MALL is the Holy Grail of all bad mall murder! Starring Kelli Maroney (Night of the Comet), Tony O'Dell (Head of the Class) and Mary Woronov and Paul Bartel reprising their roles from Eating Raoul! Plus, killer robots!
Okay, so if you don't know, CHOPPING MALL tells the story of four teenage couples who decide to stay after hours in the furniture store some of them work at in the Park Plaza Mall for what else...a night of beds and beer! Unfortunately for their as yet unlasered butts and unblown up heads, the mall has just installed a new (painfully 80's) state of the art security system involving futuristic robot guards (who laser butts and blow up heads)!

TEC Podcast: Episode 17: You Can't Destroy Me!
It's a psychic/samurai/slasher for "Horrible Holidays" Episode 17! Possibly one of the worst movies I've graced my guests with so far, 1982's BLOODBEAT starring a glowing samurai psychic ghost, a bunch of faux French rednecks and a Christmas tree in a couple of scenes. A dude brings his hyper emotional/shy/secret slut girlfriend Sarah home to his parents cabin for the holidays and unfortunately for her, his family and his penis, a poltergeist in the form of a killer samurai decides to spread some yuletide fear! Yeah. I'm still confused.
My guests who attempt to help me figure out this Christmas crap-fest are comedians and returning guests, Derek Sheen (host of the Delicious Mediocrity Podcast) and Emmett Montgomery (co-founder of The People's Republic of Komedy)! Also along for this beer and chip-fueled ride is brand new guest, comedian Yogi Paliwal (host of the Player's Room Podcast)! Together we discuss fat camp, French-fried hillbillies, violent masturbation and laser revenge all culminating in one guest's genuine freak out and our very first podcast walkout (not inspired by the movie)!

B-Movie Trailer Of The Day
This movie has pretty much got everything going for it. It's the fifth installment in a straight-to-video horror/holiday series, special effects were done by the dude who did the special effects from NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 4 and it stars Mickey Rooney. How could this not be a Christmas miracle!

TEC Podcast: Mini-Episode 13: Bad Movies vs. Orgasms
All Hallow’s Wiener is upon us, Enemaniacs and to celebrate, we recorded a very special mini-episode for Episode 13! If for some reason you decided to avoid the crowds of dudes dressed up as Justin Bieber and girls dressed up as Snooki tonight, you can curl up for at least forty minutes with us, kind of!
For this special Halloween episode of The Enematic Cinematic Podcast, the spooky shitty movie we tortured ourselves with was 1988’s non-scary slasher film Hollow Gate about a disturbed dude who decides to kill teenagers every Halloween to get back at his alcoholic father who shoved his face in an apple bobbing bucket as a kid. Basically. I guess he also decided to kill his Grandma as well, but in his defense, she did make a very offensive request for a nut cake. Check out the family fun holiday trailer below.
My brand new guests on this episode are comedian Mike Drucker, who previously wrote for SNL’s Weekend Update, comedian Doug Gale who co-hosts the comedy podcast Delicious Mediocrity as well as cartoonist/illustrator/podcast producer and now forever known as producer of my orgasms, Mark “Pasteyboy” Allender! Expect a special intro, some awesome quotes, a chicken beat box, unprofessional drunken hi jinks courtesy of me, funnies courtesy of Mike and Doug and finally…an ACTUAL rap courtesy of Mark! HAPPY HALLOWEEN!VHS Covers That Scared Me As A Kid
Do you remember when you were a kid and sometimes you would peruse the horror movie section just to freak yourself out a bit? In honor of a recent Halloween episode of the Scarecrow Video podcast that discussed this such subject amongst other things, I decided to do my very own list of VHS covers that scared the shit out of me as a kid. Some movies were valid, but many turned out later to be utter shit, either way, a picture is worth a thousand head explosions/female screams sometimes. You can find the Scarecrow Video podcast on their website as well as iTunes.
I think this one is pretty self-explanatory why it freaked me out as a kid. It's a pretty basic fear to be impaled or be killed by having something shoved in her mouth and or face. The kebab itself looks kind of tasty though. The gimmick of this film was to boast that all the kills in it are "bizarre." By today's standards of course, they are pretty tame and boring. Unfortunately I didn't see this one until high school and by then I'd seen a lot worse. The gore is rather good though and the story your basic, is the weird girl the killer premise. The first kill which really should have set the tone for the remainder of the "bizarre murders" of the film is rather tame. A girl gets her throat slashed after being strangled. Either way, it's definitely a fun slasher flick and one I often rent on my own birthday.

This image has stayed with me all my life. It's not shocking or gory. It's creepiness is subtle and slow burning and it definitely scared the shit out of me as a kid. What's in the basket?!? What IS wrong with the baby?!? What the fuck is up with it's hand?!? Why can't I see this alone?!? The image of the baby carriage turned just away from the viewer which somehow manages to make the mystery of it incredibly menacing has become somewhat iconic. Copied several times by Basket Case sequels, the It's Alive promotional campaign and cover art remains for me one of the greatest uses of subtle demonic imagery that causes the viewer to imagine the absolute worst in whatever their own personal nightmare might be. What's more frightening than that?

Speaking of demonic baby carriages, it wasn't so much the mystery of the monster in the basket to me for this one as it was the horrifying photos on the back of the cover. As a kid I had a HUGE phobia of vomiting. This was a result of being puked on at least once in every grade in elementary school as well as having watching The Karen Carpenter Story when I was four. The image of the girl on the back being force fed by Freddy only to have her face explode in vomit was probably for me at the time, the most frightening thing I could ever imagine.

You might notice there is a bit of a pattern here when it comes to little things that kill people. Troll was no exception. The movie itself is rather tame. The original Troll makeup is kind of creepy, but the storyline is actually somewhat kid appropriate. In fact, there are conspiracy theories that J.K. Rowling stole many of the elements for her Harry Potter novels from this film such as the main boy being named Harry Potter who must learn ancient magic from the secret sorceress who is living in his apartment building in order to battle the evil Troll and his magical ring. Who knows. The movie is somewhat entertaining and definitely a lot lighter fare than the menacing Troll on the cover would suggest.

It's kind of too bad that this video cover scared the shit out of me as a kid just because when I actually saw the film later when in high school, it became one of my favorite horror movies of all time. The story is your basic teenage haunted house party goes awry when demons start possessing people and killing them, but there are some great elements that make this movie a stand out in the genre. The characters are fairly memorable, including a fat guy named Stooge with a surfer accent and painted fades in his hair that calls every girl "babe" and is just trying to party. Night of the Demons also began my love affair with B-movie goddess, Linnea Quigley. Anyhow, definitely check out this film. The demon make up is great, there are plenty of tits and one-liners and Linnea Quigley sticks a tube of lipstick into her nipple while possessed by a demon. All that aside, the cover is still fucking creepy, right?
Although I consider this film to now be one of my favorite horror movies, I wasn't able to watch it fully until my twenties. Most of my life I have had an incredible fear of werewolves. I think it stems from a general sense of germaphobia. Either way, the transformation scenes and werewolf makeup in this film actually scared the shit out of me until adulthood. I'll be honest, while googling the VHS cover for the movie, I did get a little uncomfortable looking at all the werewolf pictures. I'm a pussy okay, I'll admit it, but you have to admit this cover is ingeniously horrifying. Especially if you happen to be an impressionable little fat kid who is scared shitless of werewolves.

The video cover for the 1988 remake of The Blob, BY FAR, frightened me more than any other horror movie cover as a kid. In fact, I had a hard time going to my local video store when this display was up for a few months. The movie isn't too scary, but is far superior to the original and the special effects really hold up to this day. The acting is a little shitty, but this is definitely made up for by all of the intense and horrifying kills committed by the pink blob ooze. This movie is a must see for any horror fan. Look at this cover though! What the fuck! It still creeps me out a little to this day! Genius!
Happy Birthday to Me (1981)

It's Alive (1974)

This image has stayed with me all my life. It's not shocking or gory. It's creepiness is subtle and slow burning and it definitely scared the shit out of me as a kid. What's in the basket?!? TEC Podcast: Episode 11: I Had Gas
It’s a randomly jerk-flavored reggae tinged episode of TEC! Sort of. We’ve reached double digits and to celebrate our dedication, we decided to punish ourselves with a surprisingly brilliant B-movie, 1991's Popcorn which is about a group of community college theatre major misfits that decide to put on a 50's-60's throw back horror movie fest at a soon to be torn down old movie palace. Though the night starts out a success, things get
Also in celebration of TEC's tweens, I invited back my very fist guests from Episode 1, filmmaker Jason Ryan and film blogger Colin Thiel! Reggae is bashed, people are murdered by giant mosquitoes, pig-dicks are invented and most importantly, Jason and Colin finally rap! Sort of. Big ups to beer and shitty movies! Take a listen.

TEC Podcast: Episode 8: If Only I Had My Schlong!
It’s Episode 8 of The Enematic Cinematic, Enemaniacs and hopefully you’re feeling hungry! For this episode, I bring you a savory combo of both a movie about blood thirsty cannibals and two foodie guests who work for a local gourmet food tour and no I can’t say the name because I like for my friends to keep their jobs. Our cannibal movie is the epically shitty 1987’s Blood Diner, about two bumbling brothers of different ethnicity who help their dead uncle Anwar, represented by a brain with eyeballs in a jar, collect body parts of local tramps in order to resurrect some Goddess of something named Sheetar for some reason. How do the do this you ask? Simple, they open a 50’s style vegetarian diner, kill people and cook up the parts they don’t need and feed them to hungry vegetarian patrons. Oh, the irony. Check out the trailer below.
